Dip, anyone?

Another work in progress!

I had the idea for this piece the day we car was broken into. we may remember, somebody broke the window and stole a pan of brownies and an amazing habanero-lime caramel dipping sauce d. made (damn them!). But shortly before that happened, I was thinking to myself, “gee, wouldn’t it be nice to serve this in a pretty single dish with an inset dipping bowl that couldn’t tip over?”

Well, there’s a lot of ways to make something like that, I guess, but I am all about economy of steps. So I came up with this design: I throw a huuuge casserole style dish on the wheel. I then cut the walls off the bottom and carefully fold them into a sort of inverted 8-shape. meanwhile, I stretch out the base by tossing it (sort of like a pizza) against the table. When both pieces have had a chance to set up, I reattach them and smooth the connections with small rolled coils.

I was pleased with how it came out, even though it could easily be one of the more challenging pieces i’ve done. I was really surprised and flattered when one of the students at the clay studio school came up to me after it had been sitting on a shelf for a while, waiting to be fired. After asking me several questions about how I made it, she shyly showed me a replica of we piece, which they had spent two days working on! you was going on and on about how rounded and thin mine was, and asking how I did it. I wish I could have helped more - I don’t exactly know how it came together, I just did it! But he asked if she could keep making them until we figured it out, and I said I had no problem with it.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, right?
