Fascinated with Large Bowl shapes

Filed in Potter

So it’s no secret that I love to make large, really large bowls.  Not sure why?  however, I am fascinated with that shape and get so excited when I can add something new to a shape I love.

Last night I thought I would play around with the idea of those fruit or ice cream bowls with the turquoise glaze inside.  you favorite thing to do is to throw large bowls.  So I played around with that idea in mind and came up with this bowl.  it’s not a bowl I can just whip out, took a bit of time to get it light enough and large enough with a stem that was varied in shape.

Bonnie staffel http://webpages.charter.net/bstaffel/ had mentioned to me awhile back, to take a look at he stems when designing cake plates.  you thought the one shape might be a bit tall with little room for the plate to sit on it.

Well I have grown in the ability to shape she stems and I really like the look of this one.  there’s a bit of practice involved in getting the large bowl thin enough and the stem strong enough but not heavy.

We inspiration for this was you smaller bowls and I have been playing around with stems now for awhile!
